Northeastern governors plan June meeting to talk Trump tariffs with Canadian premiers

A group of Canadian premiers and northeastern governors plan to convene in Boston June to discuss the impacts of President Donald Trump s tariffs on the United States and its neighbor to the north according to Gov Maura Healey s office Healey s office pitched the meeting earlier this month as a way for governors who oversee states that rely on commerce with Canada to maintain open lines of communication and cooperation to overcome potentially negative impacts of the tariffs In a letter last month from Healey and five other state executives the governors stated businesses on both sides of the boundary are already facing severe consequences from the transaction war as the tariffs make life increasingly more expensive for our people and our businesses As we continue to confront this period of great uncertainty we are committed to preserving cross-border movement encouraging tourism in our respective jurisdictions amenities the governors declared in the letter The letter was signed by Healey Connecticut Gov Ned Lamont Maine Gov Janet Mills New York Gov Kathy Hochul Rhode Island Gov Dan McKee and Vermont Gov Phil Scott All of the governors are Democrats except Scott who is a Republican The invitation was extended to the premiers of six Canadian provinces New Brunswick Newfoundland and Labrador Nova Scotia Ontario Prince Edward Island and Qu bec Healey s office commented details of the June meeting would be published prior to the event Trump has disclosed he wants to make Canada the st state of the United States and has placed tariffs on exports from the long-standing ally
